Message from FLAMPAC President David J. Becker, M.D.:
In last Tuesday's General Election, candidates that were endorsed by FLAMPAC won 72 out of 85 races (85% success rate). The following is a breakdown of these campaigns - Statewide/Cabinet, Congressional, State Senate and State House.
Statewide - FLAMPAC endorsed candidates for statewide office won two out of three races with FLAMPAC endorsed candidate Charlie Crist defeating Jim Davis in the Governor's race and FLAMPAC endorsed candidate Bill McCollum defeating Skip Campbell in the Attorney General race. Physicians across the State of Florida, under the leadership of FLAMPAC, raised a significant amount of funds for both of these successful statewide campaigns. FLAMPAC's only statewide loss was in the Chief Financial Officer race where Alex Sink defeated FLAMPAC's endorsed candidate Tom Lee.
Congressional - FLAMPAC recommended that AMPAC support 18 candidates running for Congress and 16 of these candidates won there elections (89% success rate). The highlight was the election of Gus Bilirakis to succeed his father, Congressman Mike Bilirakis, in Congressional District 9. FLAMPAC Board Member Robert Entel, M.D., played a significant role in this race serving as the Chairman of the Bilirakis campaign. AMPAC also supported Vern Buchanan in the Congressional District 13 open seat and Kathy Castor in the Congressional District 11 open seat. In addition, 13 incumbent members of the Florida Congressional Delegation were re-elected with financial support from AMPAC. We are disappointed that Congressman Clay Shaw lost his re-election bid in Congressional District 22. Also, Joe Negron ran a spirited campaign in the Congressional District 16 race (Foley seat) but came up just 4,100 votes short out of 227,000 votes cast in an election were his name did not even appear on the ballot.
State Senate - Candidates endorsed by FLAMPAC in the State Senate won 7 out of 8 races (88% success rate). In addition, another candidate supported by FLAMPAC, Senator-Elect Don Gaetz was elected without opposition. The highlight was the election of 1000 Club supported candidate Steve Oelrich in Senate District 14 (replacing Rod Smith). Also, FLAMPAC supported Ronda Storms in the Senate District 10 open seat (replacing Tom Lee) and Jeremy Ring in the Senate District 32 open seat (replacing Skip Campbell). We have achieved our objective of significantly upgrading medicine's support within the Florida Senate and look forward to working with Senate President Ken Pruitt and his leadership team that will preside over a 26-14 Republican Majority.
FLAMPAC's only loss was in Senate District 16 where Charlie Justice defeated Kim Berfield. However, Senate District 16 was only a partial loss because we achieved our main objective of defeating Frank Farkas in the Republican Primary. FLAMPAC's goal in Senate District 16 was always two-fold: 1). defeat Frank Farkas in the Primary, and 2). elect Kim Berfield in the General Election. While we a disappointed that Kim Berfield did not win in Senate District 16, FLAMPAC can take credit for eliminating one of medicine's biggest legislative adversaries, Frank Farkas, in the Primary. In fact, if not for the efforts of FLAMPAC and People for a Better Florida (PBF) in the September Primary, we could have been dealing with Senator-Elect Frank Farkas right now. Special thanks to all the 1000 Club and PBF contributors because without your funding, we would not have been able to eliminate Frank Farkas from the Florida Legislature.
State House - Candidates endorsed by FLAMPAC won 48 out of 56 races (86% success rate). The highlight was the re-election of 1000 Club supported candidates - Representative Gayle Harrell in House District 81, Representative Larry Cretul in House District 22, as well as the re-election of Representative Ed Homan, M.D. in House District 60. We are very pleased to have these outstanding friends of the medicine and members of the medical family going back to Tallahassee to protect your interests. FLAMPAC participated in 20 open seat races and our candidates were successfully elected in 16 of these highly contested races. One of these newly elected legislators, Jim Frishe in House District 54 was supported by the 1000 Club in his primary race against a chiropractor and another newly elected legislator, Peter Nehr, in House District 48 also received significant medical support in his successful race against a chiropractor. We look forward to working with all of these newly elected members in the Florida House where Speaker Marco Rubio, a previous 1000 Club supported legislator, will preside over a 78-42 Republican Majority.
Listed below are results of every race that FLAMPAC participated in last week. If a District is not listed it means that either the legislator was 1). elected without opposition or 2). FLAMPAC was neutral in the General Election.
